Oh Blogging, how I’ve missed you.
I was not prepared for this first week at Queen’s. There has been nonstop activities and I’ve had so much fun getting to know everyone over the past few days and getting a taste of Australian culture as well. That being said…I am exhausted. I’m hoping to get on more of a schedule by next week so I can function properly.
I really missed being able to update the blog regularly especially since the outlook is not good on skype and email. Blogging is my best bet for communication with the world outside of Australia!
I’ll take you wayy back to about two weeks ago…RACE DAY!
I ran the 10k in the Run Melbourne race which I am told is the largest running event in the city. One of the things I loved about this event is that you were able to choose which local charity you wanted to raise money for upon entering. Participants raised around 2 million dollars this year!
I arrived via the tram about an hour before the 10k start. The half marathon was well underway when I got there.
The race, which consisted of a half marathon, 10k, or a 5k, began in the heart of downtown Melbourne at Federation Square.

I went into the race having only run once in a two-week period and had the mindset that I would see how I felt to determine if I was going to give it my all, stay with a slow jog, or walk during a few stretches. The route was really flat and easy on my body. The weather was also perfect for a run and there were only a few instances of wind.

The 10k was probably one of the most fun and scenic races I’ve ever participated in. The loop took us around Fed Square, through the Botanic Gardens, along the Yarra River, MCG, and Rod Laver Arena. (Sorry ladies, no sightings of Rafa)
I had so much fun just looking at all the sights and people around me I realized I was keeping a good pace towards mile 5 and had a ton of energy left. I knew at that point I was going to PR but I wasn’t sure by how much I would beat it. I just wanted to break 58:00 in my head.
I did just that!
57:26!!!! Woooo! PR PR PR!
This is probably my favorite race picture to date. Straight Cheesin’. I felt as happy as I looked.
I’m also so under armoured out its ridiculous. I’m sure people thought I was sponsored. Natch.
I was really proud of myself but my right knee was really feeling it afterwards and continued to hurt for a good few days. Limping around a city is enough to make me take a serious running hiatus. Since the race, I’ve cut back the running completely and am going to cut it out for 2-3 weeks and then just pepper it into workouts to see how I feel.
The 10k had around 8,000 runners and the 5k finished shortly after the 10k finishers.
Here are some photos so you can get an idea of how many people there were!
I’ve joined the campus gym since then which had a boatload of nice equipment. Although I think I’m going to need to bring a cheat sheet of conversions for mph and lbs!
I’m off to clean up my room so I can take pictures to show you my living arrangements!
