A Night of Footy

15 Aug

I attended my second footy game well prepared with all the essentials. Namely: a raincoat!

I went to the Carlton Essendon game which was a night game.

Many people have tried to sway me to support their team. After a long grueling mental match between Geelong and Carlton fans, I have finally chosen a side.

Most of the footy teams are based out of Melbourne. So basically it is the equivalent of having a Brooklyn team, a Manhattan team, a Bronx team, etc…

I figure why not support the suburb I am living in.

GO BLUES! (That’s Carlton :) )

The security is soo different over here. Technically you’re allowed to bring in food but not drinks. Hardly anyone ever checks your bag though. I was waiting in line and the security guy just told me to skip it and go ahead!

I smuggled in my Sigg and a Cajun Tofu Salad and a Raw Fruit and Nut Cookie I picked up at Habib Wholefood’s before the game.

The tofu salad was so-so but the cookie was great! Tons of cashews to keep me satisfied. :)

I just stopped in real fast before the game, but long enough to spot a LARABAR!!! Ahhh something I recognize from America! I will be going back here in the VERY near future to scope out what other delicious health foods they have :) .

Prime time seating

Before every game the teams come out by breaking through a banner

And the view…

Action Shot

During warm-ups:

Midway through the first quarter, we realized that we were actually sitting in assigned seating.

14$ for front row seats did seem too good to be true. Sigh

You just can’t see the muscle tone from 3 sections up…

The “after” shot. It was cool to see the game from a different perspective though.

Footy Fight!!!

Apparently fights don’t happen that often, but this match was rather heated. It turned into an all out team brawl after a bad call was made against Essendon.

Once the fourth quarter hit Carlton scored four consecutive goals and the once close game became a blowout

Carlton won 149-73

I could try to explain all the rules and scoring but that would take ages as there are sooo many.

Overall, the game was great! Very action packed and intense up until the fourth quarter. It was great to see a game where both the teams had a good amount of talent (Sorry Richmond and North Melbourne :( )

The finals (or playoffs as I still continue to call them) start in 2 weeks and Carlton is primed to be in the top 8. Looks like I may have chosen well, but I hear there is always time to switch sides till the Grand Final.

The next day I went to watch the Queen’s team play Footy against another college. It was fun to see the professionals and then watch the amateurs play.

I think we should leave it to the professionals though….

Just sayin’ ;)

What’s the most outlandish sport you have seen?

I hear cricket can be very confusing, and LONG!

Night! (To America)

Arvo! (To Aussies)
